PETER GOODMAN

​ Mr. Goodman was born and raised in San Francisco. After graduating from UC Berkeley in 1970 with a degree in Asian History, he was admitted to the Golden Gate University School of Law. While obtaininh his degree, Mr. Goodman served as a research assistant in the Office of the Alameda County Public Defender, and co-authored The Perils of Piecemeal Reform, a law review article in the Golden Gate Law Review discussing the decriminalization of public intoxication. Upon obtaining his law degree in 1975, Mr. Goodman was hired by the Alameda County Public Defender as a post-graduate clerk. After passing the bar later that year, Mr. Goodman was hired as a Deputy Public Defender, a position he was privileged to hold until July of 1980, when he returned to San Francisco to open his own law practice. Mr. Goodman has been certified annually since 2004 by the California Board of Legal Specialization of the California State Bar as a Criminal Law Specialist. He has been selected each of the last fifteen years as a Super Lawyer, and Peer Rated for Highest Level of Professional Excellence by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Goodman is licensed to practice in all California courts and has been is admitted to federal district courts in the Northern, Eastern and Central Districts of California, the Eastern District of New York, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mr. Goodman is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, the California DUI Lawyers Association, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. During the forty-four years Mr. Goodman has been a criminal defense lawyer in San Francisco, he has represented a broad range of clients charged with state and federal offenses ranging from DUI to murder. Recently, he has represented defendants charged with identity theft, drug crimes, internet crimes involving the possession of child pornography, domestic violence, and child abduction. In parallel legal proceedings which involve a criminal DUI charge with the DMV moving to spend or revoke the defendant’s license on the same set of facts, Mr. Goodman has succeed in both forums, including a case decided by the United States Supreme Court in 2021 which limited the circumstances under which a police officer can enter the home of a person suspected of committing a misdemeanor without firsts obtaining a search warrant. Mr. Goodman offers a free consultation to prospective clients, persons previously charged, and those seeking representation for an incarcerated family member or friend. Mr. Goodman can also be retained to consult on an hourly basis on matters where
a second opinion is being sought.
